Functionality of line filters
Line filters (EMC filters) are often regarded as a Blackbox and, justifiably, the user isn?t normally concerned with its inner workings. However, for the effective use of filters, it is advantageous to have some background knowledge. This article focuses on leakage currents and what should be observed in connection with this phenomenon.

Circuit Breakers for Equipment
The Many Factors to Consider When Specifying Thermal Circuit Breakers for Equipment Thermal circuit breakers for equipment (CBE) protect motors and transformers against electrical overloading. The trip release of a breaker takes place with the deflection of a bimetal. This deflection is in turn dependent on heat caused by the level of current flowing through the bimetal. The typical time-current characteristic of a thermal circuit breaker is a result of the thermal delay of the bimetal.

Lifetime & Reliability and of Multilayer Piezo Actuators
The paper describes the development and lifetime tests of ceramic encapsulated actuators in comparision with conventional polymer coated piezo actuators. Dynamic operation with a new internal electrode design for stress reduction as well as special external electrodes for high-current applications are discussed. Several graphs enable the quick calculation of lifetime under different operational and environmental conditions.

Parts Collaboration within The Sunstone ECOsystem?: PCB123?, LiveBOM?, Digi-Key? & NXP?
Sunstone Circuits’ technological collaboration with Digi-Key Corporation and NXP Semiconductor provides Sunstone PCB123 CAD users access to ready-made, certified parts symbols from NXP. Not only is sufficient information provided to ensure accurate physical design, but the collaboration also ensures efficient design with component availability and pricing information. Within the Sunstone ECOsystem?, these new functional elements provide the end user with a turn-key level of convenience and accuracy, even when working on prototypes and early engineering projects.

Combining Boundary Scan and JTAG Emulation for advanced structural Test and Diagnostics
Boundary Scan and JTAG Emulation are two perfectly complementary methods, which are fused into one extremely flexible and powerful technique for advanced structural tests by GOEPEL electronic’s VarioTAP technology. By combining the benefits of both methods, VarioTAP provides a significantly higher test quality, shorter test and programming times, and higher quality of diagnostics with considerably reduced costs.

Towards a universal registry of photovoltaic modules and assemblies
The issues surrounding serialization of photovoltaic modules and related large assemblies have been under discussion for some time. One major industry standard is for a minimum 25-year product lifetime and warranty on every module.

Understanding Grounding Concepts in EM Simulators
Misunderstanding how ground is implemented in circuit simulation is one of the most common misuses of electromagnetic (EM) simulators and their results. This white paper discusses the definition of ground in EM simulators and how to correctly choose among various grounding options, a topic of special importance to designers using the results in a circuit simulator. Many modern simulators now support the notion of local grounding, where different ports can use different ground definitions. New features in AWR’s AXIEM? 2009 3D planar EM simulator offer extensive sources/ports and de-embedding options, including internal edge, finite difference/gap and extraction ports, and per-port, coupled line and mutual group de-embedding.

Development of Highly Reliable Multilayer Piezo Actuators
The paper describes the development and lifetime tests of ceramic encapsulated actuators under different operating conditions (DC and AC). The actuators are compared to polymer coated piezo ceramic actuators in long term tests. Equations and graphs for lifetime calculation under different operational and environmental conditions and special internal electrode designs for stress reduction are discussed.
